Stormy weather

Our sunny spell is gone and yesterday we got sideways rain and 30 knot winds. Today is the same - but mainly high wind, and is expected to continue until Wednesday. The seas are wild and big - even Sam isn't out surfing (he would get blown off the board).
Fine weather again later in the week. Mind you looking at the typhoons, flooding and hurricanes elsewhere we are pretty lucky really. The photos are from last week, some fun waves.

BIC Surfboards

This month we have received delivery of our BIC surfboards. The 8'4 Magnum is a great board to learn to surf, as it is stable, wide and really easy to catch waves with.

The 9'4 BIC Super Magnum is the big daddy of surfboards. If you are tall or a bit bigger this board really makes surfing easy. The 9'4 BIC Super Magnum is also a great stand up paddle board for experienced surfers to SUP, or for kids.

Low Season weather - August Sunshine

The weather has been amazing. We have lost count of how many days it was since it last rained. We are watering the garden constantly. It has been hot and sunny. The sea is very clear, and good enough to snorkel at the point. Koh Lanta Dive companies have been happy with great visibility and plenty of fish to see.
Last week there were perfect waves to learn to surf and over the weekend it is supposed to get a bit windier and the swell will increase., so here is hoping we get some good surf.

Windy weather & waves

The wind arrived yesterday. The forecast is for wind and messy seas (but bigger swell) for the next week, the rain will be localised showers, so one beach might be sunny and the other not. We can see a few storms passing us by.
This weather is great for experienced kiteboarders or windsurfers such as Matt from Ao Nang who got a good couple of hours.

The last two weeks have been great for learner surfers - with kids and adults from all corners of the world coming to learn in our warm fun waves.

Saving a turtle on Klong Dao

Today a large fishing net with a tangle of ropes washed up onto the beach. Caught inside was a small turtle. We managed to get it free and it was uninjured and still strong.

The resort staff had other ideas - saying they need it for good luck and a blessing - and the turtle was wisked away - half an hour later he was returned and they all prayed for good luck and then he was finally released - thankfully the talcum powder disappeared as it swam away.

Sunshine & small Surf

We have had perfect weather the last couple of days. A shower overnight cleared to a stunning day with not a breath of wind. There is a ground swell coming through so the waves are really nice. A good day to surf.
This weather is set to continue, with some more wind and bigger waves expected from Wednesday and a shower predicted, clearing again by the weekend (according to aonang weather).

beach clean & crab saving

We have had another overcast sort of week. The waves have dropped down and it is perfect flat water stand up paddle boarding.
Some school kids turned up on the beach on Thursday and did a bit of a clean up (every bit helps).

On Friday a fishing net washed up on the low tide. It must have been dragging  the bottom for a long time and had entangled hundreds of small crabs. With some help 3 of us managed to free 73 crabs - so they can live another day!

stormy days

After three weeks of sunshine and dry weather the weather has broken and we are now on day  three of rain. It is supposed to break up in the next day or so. The wind has dropped now and the surf is ok, but not breaking really well. Good to get wet though.

Final storm June 10 2012
After the stormy weather passed around 10 June we have had nothing but perfect sunshine. The waves have been small but consistent, and have now dropped to be small but OK for learners. We are even watering the garden because it is so hot and sunny! supposed to continue like this for about another week.

June Storm Koh Lanta

We have just come out of about 5 days of very stormy weather. The last day and half has been non stop rain, and because of the planet alignment (venus) and big spring tides - coupled with very big seas it has played havoc everywhere. There has been bad coastal erosion, with places in Klong Nin falling into the sea. The tides here have seen the sea come up over the wall and onto the lawn.

A couple more days of big tides - then cleaning up some more. Hopefully the waves will settle down so we can go surfing

Wild weather

25 May Storm Klong Dao beach 2012

Bottles washed up from Malaysia, Sri lanka & Maldives (then one from Indonesia)
We have just come out of about 5 or 6 days of really wild weather, from the 23rd May to Sunday 28th. The low system covered from Phuket, Krabi, Lanta and down to Trang. Big seas and some really big storm cells. On Friday one storm came in late in the afternoon and left a path of destruction - trees down, roofs off, a day to avoid being under a coconut tree. We dont often get storms that intense for this time of year, and with contant rain. But now the worst has passed, the sea is not as messy and wild and we can get out, clean up, dry out and go surfing.

Kiteboard and Surf Koh Lanta

The wind is up and so are the waves. We have had a couple of big overnight storms, there is low pressure out in the Andaman that has been giving localised showers. It has been clear in the day but last night there was a big thunder/lightening storm. Lanta seem to be on the edge of the bad weather, as always.
On Tuesday we had a day with nice strong wind, enough to get Bernhard from France out for a few runs.

The surf has also been good - perfect for beginners, and the biggest waves early in the morning - for Sam to get some action.

surf season has arrived in Thailand

The waves have finally arrived - it has been months! This week there has only been the occasional rain shower overnight and the days have been overcast but fine. The wave swell is finally here with 3-4 foot on Monday and no wind. Today, Thursday the wind as picked up a bit making the waves a bit messy.

We have had our first beginner surfers of the season getting out and learning. The conditions for learners has been perfect!

April Weather on Lanta

Well the weather has been hot and sunny, we have had the occassional afternoon thunderstorm, but these are localised and dont last for very long. The spring tides this year have been very high, coinciding with a full moon the water came up really high -  but looked very beautiful - just like the postcards. The wind has been very light and only good for beginner windsurfers. Great Stand Up paddling and snorkelling though.

A week of thunderstorms, week of sunshine

Last week was a week of afternoon thunderstorms. Like clockwork at 3pm the rain started to pour. We had a few overnight showers also. Now this week it has cleared to be hot and sunny again with offshore light wind. Sam had a great windsurf session on the 7th with a big storm coming in and blowing 20 knots for a couple of hours - makes for good windsurfing.

The last couple of days we have also had some small waves - a prelude to what is to come in the next few months. GREAT.

February

Michele and Isabelle from Hong Kong just learned to windsurf with Sam. They had a great time.
Well I don't know how it happened but it has been a month since the last post. The weather has been mostly blue sky and sunshine. Light winds, with the odd day of good winds. We had a few days of rain which got the small river flowing, but  other than that it has been nice. The evenings have been relatively cool.
The last couple of days have been HOT, so we have been shade dwellers.

Koh Lanta High season

Haven't written for a while - we are full on into High season. Over the christmas period we had great weather for windsurfing - the most consistent 2 days of wind seen for this time of year. The first day of the new year saw Rain - actually quite refreshing and gave us a chance for a day off. It cleared in one final downpour on the 2nd then from then it has been hot and sunny. by next week there should be some more showers - forecast anyway.
Happy new year.
